Singing for God

Our Choir’s Story: A Legacy of Faith and Music

In 2012, a new chapter of music and worship began in Old Chapel. It started with a simple yet meaningful moment—the parish priest at that time reached out to a servant of God, asking for help to sing at the chapel since it had long been without one. Before that, there was only a one-man choir, a devoted musician who played the keyboard, ensuring that every Mass was filled with song. But when his keyboard broke, the music stopped. For a while, no choir led the songs during Mass.

Seeing the need, that servant of God invited a group of youth from a religious ministry to come together and bring the liveliness of listening to songs, back to the chapel. It wasn’t about creating a perfect choir—it was about serving. And so, a handful of youth answered the call, stepping up to sing, lead, and worship through music. At that time, these youths didn’t realize that they would be able to find another goal in their lives. They also unleashed their inner talents, making this an opportunity for them to improve these talents.

At first, it was small—just a few voices, learning and growing together. But over time, the choir became more than just a group; it became a family. Until new voices were welcomed, while the older ones had to focus on their lives, but the music never stopped. The choir lived on, adapting to every change, welcoming every challenge, and carrying the spirit of worship through the years.

We’ve seen many transitions—different parish priests, different generations of singers, different challenges, different events and activities—but one thing remained: our commitment to serving God through music. The youth who once stood at the front, leading songs, eventually passed their roles to the next generation, ensuring that the legacy continued. And just as the choir before us paved the way, we now do the same for those who will come after us.

There was a time when we were invited to sing at the main parish, a great opportunity that we embraced wholeheartedly. Though over the years, our schedules there became fewer, we continued to serve whenever called. But beyond the church walls, our mission also grew. We are now called to sing for burials, to support families in times of grief, and to be there whenever people need a choir—because music is not just about celebration, but also about comfort and connection.

In addition to the commitment and joy of serving God through singing songs on the Holy Mass, we didn’t expect that many would express their joy and have been touched. They offered to be our dear sponsors who would give us meriendas that we all would eat after mass, this added to our dedication and fire to our spirits. Until today, we are still grateful to them. In all these years, we realized that it was good to be seen by many and we are beyond happy that we can inspire others, leading to welcoming new members.

Looking back, the journey hasn’t always been easy. There were struggles, moments when voices were fewer, times when we wondered what the future would hold. It also once became a family choir, occupying only two rows of seats, compared to the past when some had to go sit on the other side since all reserved seats were taken by the choir. But through it all, we remained—not for recognition, not for obligation, but because this is our way of serving. This is our prayer. This is our home, our comfort, and our call.

As we continue to move forward, we hold onto the same purpose we started with: to sing, serve, and lift our voices for the glory of God. We will always remember the memories of the people who once entered the four corners of the chapel, who sat, laughed, ate, and prayed with us. And no matter how many years pass, no matter how many faces change, as long as hearts are willing to sing, this choir will always remain.
